5 ways to relax and recharge

The holiday season is finally here, with its promise of longer days and warmer nights. What are your plans? Hiking on a panoramic trail? Sunbathing until sunset, or maybe visiting a distant country you’ve always been curious about?

Whatever is on your ‘summer bucket list’, it can be easy to get caught up in the excitement of it all and forget to take a moment for yourself. These quick tips will help you switch off and enjoy a well-deserved brain break.

Forget about work

Find it hard to put your job aside? Don’t forget that holidays are all about stopping, breathing and letting things settle. Most importantly, healthy work involves a balance of effort and rest, and there’s nothing to feel guilty about.

If you think that’s easier said than done, start with a simple trick: on your last day of work, write down all the things you need to do when you return – then forget about that for the rest of your holiday. Plus, refrain from any work-related tasks, including reading your emails or trying to empty your inbox. Even relaxing requires a dash of discipline.

Have a digital detox

The screen - be it television, smartphone, tablet or pc - is so intrinsically part of our daily lives that we often don’t realise how long we spend checking it. Just to give you some figures, research commissioned by Specsavers earlier this year found that nearly one in five Kiwis spend up to 35 hours per week watching screens – almost the equivalent of a full-time job!

Remember: unplugging, even if just for a while, comes with benefits. Social networks and apps are all powerful, entertaining tools, but breaking the habit can free up some valuable leisure time and help you enjoy your surroundings. And if you don’t know how to start, try to go ‘cold turkey’ and switch every device off for at least 24 hours (or more, if you feel brave enough).

Spoil yourself, clear your mind

With lots of food, several rounds of cheerful toasts and social gatherings to attend, the holidays can be a tad stressful, too. That’s why it’s important to take some time just for yourself. Be ‘strategic’: adopt a morning ritual, pencil things in rather than overcommit, and maybe schedule some pampering, like a long bath with your favourite music on or a treatment at a local spa. The ‘me-time’ is never wasted time.

Take stock

We are so busy with our day-to-day lives and activities that we may sometimes lose sight of friends and family. Make your holidays an opportunity to strengthen relationships and practise gratitude. According to psychologists, being grateful can significantly increase well-being and satisfaction, leading to more positive emotions, better sleep, and even stronger immune systems.

Go outside

It's no secret that New Zealand is spoiled for choice when it comes to awe-inspiring landscapes, pristine beaches and amazing walks. If you really want to recharge yourself, why not breathe in some fresh air rather than lounge on the couch? It doesn’t necessarily have to be a long walk or an entire day of activities – sometimes even taking a quick stroll or a swim is good for releasing the stress and getting your creative juices flowing. Give yourself time to ‘be’.
